Choosing epoxy resin can be overwhelming, each type has different characteristics. When choosing a 2 part epoxy for art, ensure that it is clear, self-levelling, and contains UV inhibitors so that the artwork will not yellow.

The type of epoxy you require will depend on your needs, as will additives such as colourants or glimmer. Selecting the right resin for your job can be difficult, but is very important. To help you, we have created an online Epoxy Resin Selection Guide. It will help you decide which epoxy resin is best for your artwork pour.

    Types Of Epoxy Resin

There are many applications for epoxy resin besides resin art. Its durable and strong material makes it ideal for construction and other industrial applications. Besides being useful for aesthetic reasons, it can also be applied to flooring and countertops. Different epoxy resins have different uses based on the epoxy resin kit viscosity or thickness.

There are four main types of epoxy resin:

    1. High and Low viscosity, Slow and Fast setting.
    2. High viscosity epoxy resins provide depth in finished projects and are easily built up in layers, but require more heat to become fluid.
    3. While low viscosity epoxy resins get better air release and need less heat to move, they could drip off surfaces and generate more waste. And, you might be required to apply several coats to achieve the thickness desired.
    4. A final consideration in choosing a system is considering how quickly you want the resin to cure.

After determining the appropriate epoxy resin kit for your piece, the next step is selecting the right formula.

While making this decision, consider two factors:

    Curing time and hardness.

Curing time refers to how long it takes for the resin to harden, while hardness measures the strength and durability of the final result.

Lastly, choose a size that suits your needs.

There are three sized epoxy kits: small, medium, and large.

Smaller sizes are preferred for smaller projects, while larger sizes offer better value and are suitable for bigger projects that require more resin.

    When To Use Epoxy Resin?

Epoxy resin’s versatility makes it a go-to material for a wide range of applications:

Art and Crafting: Artists and crafters love epoxy resin for its ability to create stunning, durable pieces. From intricate jewellery to expansive resin tables, the possibilities are endless. Resin art projects often feature vibrant colour pigments and intricate designs, making each piece unique.

Industrial Manufacturing: In the industrial sector, epoxy is used for coating, casting, and laminating. Its strong adhesive properties make it ideal for creating robust and long-lasting components.

Construction: Epoxy is a key player in construction, providing strong bonds between materials like concrete, steel, and wood. Its durability ensures that structures remain intact and resilient over time.

Automotive: The automotive industry benefits from epoxy resin’s strength and lightweight properties. It’s used to create various car parts and accessories, contributing to both performance and aesthetics.

    How Does Epoxy Resin Work?

Epoxy resin, is a popular two part adhesive, and is composed of a resin and a hardener. The chemical reaction between these components results in a strong, long-lasting plastic once it has hardened. It is used in a wide range of industries, including boat building, vehicle repair, and countertops and kitchenware.

Its impressive strength and adhesive properties make it especially effective for bonding unlike materials together. For instance, metal can be joined to wood with epoxy resin, or plastic can be adhered to glass. It’s worth noting that the hardening process of epoxy produces heat due to its exothermic nature. This feature can be advantageous during cold weather conditions as it quickens the curing process.

When working in high temperatures or direct sunlight, it is crucial to avoid exposure to heat in order to maintain the bond’s resilience. Heat can soften resin and weaken its adherence. One of the most appealing characteristics of epoxy is its versatility in terms of appearance.

It can be easily tinted with different colour pigments or mixed with other materials like glitter or crushed glass to create unique resin colours, designs and patterns. Thus making it a favourite among artists and craftsmen who utilise it in various creative projects.

In a wide range of industries and creative endeavours, it continues to be a valuable tool with endless possibilities and a wide selection of applications.
